Welcome to Clean Beauty Muse, a regular column wherein I ask cool people with beautiful skin and flawless make-up how they achieve their glow with clean beauty products. Today’s installment features Nicole Dzurko, founder and CEO of Revival Body Care, an all-natural, vegan skin & hair care company whose products are handcrafted in small batches in Cleveland and sold all around the world.
+ Hello! Introduce yourself!
Hi! I’m Nicole Dzurko, owner + founder of Revival Body Care. Revival launched out of my home kitchen in late 2014, out of love for all things clean and natural. I have three daughters, and knowing how many synthetic ingredients are used in personal care products (and that USA has minimal restrictions), I decided to take things into my own hands and start making my own products. Fast forward five years, and Revival is a fully comprehensive collection of skin, lip, and hair care. Revival can be found in our Flagship store in Lakewood, OH, and is stocked in 200+ shops nationwide. One of my main goals when starting Revival, was not only to provide exceptional natural beauty products but also mindfully select only Certified Organic, Fair-Trade, 100% vegan ingredients – every ingredient serves a purpose. Sustainability from beginning to end of the product cycle and education of natural beauty, wellness, and self-care are huge components of Revival. I’m so grateful to have this brand to share the mission with my ever-growing and supportive Revival Tribe!
+ What does beauty mean to you?
Beauty is more than skin deep. While I create products that encourage revealing our most beautiful skin, without having to cover it up with gobs of make-up, at the end of the day, beauty is confidence. Beauty is kindness. Beauty is all around us! We just need to be open to it.
+ Why are you passionate about clean beauty?
My passion for clean beauty stems from having three daughters. Research shows that the average woman uses 11 personal care products every day! (soap, shampoo/conditioner, moisturizer, perfume, make-up, deodorant, etc.). I learned that Europe had banned thousands of ingredients from being used in not only food but also personal care products/cosmetics, whereas the USA has only banned 11! The USA is so far behind and hasn’t updated these regulations since 1938. As I was reading the ingredient labels on our products, I was shocked, scared, and appalled. Nature provides us with all of the beautiful resources we need. It’s my mission to share knowledge, invoke change, and continue to provide the highest quality, gentle yet effective clean beauty products via Revival.
+ How would you describe your skin?
My skin is normal but can lend to the dry side during the winter months.
+ What does your morning skincare routine look like?
My morning routine starts with getting water into my system. I’ve set a goal to drink at least 100oz of water a day, being that hydration starts from within! Skin will absolutely show signs of dehydration by looking dull, dry, and have more pronounced wrinkles. I take each of my girls to school separately, so my mornings are fairly fast-paced. I’ll get up and quickly splash some water on my face to wake up, and then follow up with my Revival Goddess Serum Awaken. Then I’m out the door for middle-school drop-off. I leave a gua sha in my car, and on the way to drop-off, I will get in a quick session! It helps to stimulate blood flow and wakes up my skin!
I generally work out afterward, so I will wash my face with Revival Cleanse Facial Wash, then a few times a week I will use our soon to be released Facial Polish for gentle exfoliation. I will follow up with my Revival Radiant Facial Toning Mist, another round of Awaken, and then will top off my eye area with Revival Illuminate Eye Serum. If I have an extra couple of minutes, I’ll run my Gemstone Roller over my face for a quick facial massage to encourage cell turnover, collagen production, and lymphatic drainage!
For my body, I alternate between dry-brushing and using Revival Body Scrubs. I always lock in moisture by applying Revival Covet Body Oil as soon as I step out of the shower! Now, this might sound like a long and elaborate routine, but I promise it takes no more than five minutes! As a busy mom and business owner, I need to be efficient, but also want to look and feel my best!
+ What does your nighttime skincare routine look like?
The one thing that I always tell my customers is to WASH YOUR FACE BEFORE BED! I can’t stress this enough. Even if you don’t wear make-up, debris and sweat can and will accumulate on your skin. (Swipe your skin with a bit of toning mist and a cotton swab at the end of the day). When we sleep, our skin is working to regenerate, so if it’s covered in old make-up and ick from the day, you might find that your skin is going to react in ways that aren’t the most ideal. I will wash my face with Revival Cleanse Facial Wash and then follow up with Revival Goddess Serum Dream, which will work it’s magic while I’m sleeping. I’ll do another swipe of Illuminate Eye Serum and then will run Revival Bloom Lash + Brow Serum over my browns & lashes to promote growth and length.
I LOVE to take baths, so a couple of nights a week, I will bathe with my Revival Immerse Soaking Salts and will also whip up a Revival Goddess Clay Mask and apply it to my face, neck, and chest! Just 20 minutes to unwind at the end of a busy day feels like heaven and helps me to sleep better!
+ Talk us through your day-to-day make-up routine.
I generally wear no make-up at all. Especially if I’m in shipping/production mode with Revival. I feel that our greatest foundation is clear skin, and Revival products give me the confidence to be bare-skinned! On days that I feel like I want to spruce things up a bit, I will wear a little bronzer/highlighter, a swipe of mascara and a tinted lip balm.
+ What do you change in your make-up routine for nighttime?
For night time, I go a bit heavier with the highlighter to emphasize my cheekbones and eyes, might do heavier mascara, and a classic cat-eye with black eyeliner.
+ Which are your go-to clean beauty products and brands?
Of course, Revival is my baby, and I’ve developed every product through months of research and trial & error while handcrafting each one in small batches! But for make-up, I love Au Naturale. They have a lovely collection, and I love all of my purchases from them!
+ Is there anything you try to avoid altogether, skin-care or makeup-wise?
I am very, very, very diligent about reading ingredient lists. There is a lot of greenwashing out there, where companies will make a label look “natural” or tout the hot clean beauty phrases, but you’ll look the ingredients and quickly find that the product is most certainly NOT natural or clean. ‘Fragrance’ is a BIG red flag. If you see that word, RUN! It is an umbrella term that companies can hide hundreds of toxic ingredients under. I also will not buy from companies that use plastic packaging (when there are similar alternatives) and excess outside packaging, which will end up in the garbage. The best way to demand change is through our wallets!
+ What is the most challenging aspect of clean beauty for you?
For me, we were already eating clean for 10+ years, so the transition to clean beauty was ‘easier.’ I feel really good seeing the surge of clean brands on the market, especially over the past five years, because it means that consumers are more educated and aware. We have a LONG LONG way to go, and things like not having Federal regulations and bans on toxic chemicals are hard to swallow. But it keeps me forging ahead in providing education, wellness, and natural beauty to my family, friends, and Revival Tribe! I love that this platform has allowed me to be a small part of the change that is SO greatly needed! Lots of little changes ultimately equal big changes, and that gives me hope!
