Midi Skirts

It seems like a long time ago since my preferred silhouette stopped well above my knee, even longer since I firmly believed that anything below the knee would overwhelm my 5’3″ (on a good day) frame. Sure, I am not opposed to wearing a mini-skirt, nor a dress that emphasizes my legs; but, over the past couple of years, I have found myself disproportionately drawn to pieces with a bit more material. Floor-length vintage dresses form the basis of my relaxed summer wardrobe and flared denim is my current obsession. However, there is one style that I go back to season after season, and that is the midi skirt. The perfect ladylike addition to every wardrobe, a midi skirt silhouette adapts to every season and offers a variety of styling options ranging from casual day-wear to more elevated evening outfits. Here are my tips for how to style them and the ones that I am currently eyeing up to add to my wardrobe…

How to Style A Midi Skirt

When it comes to styling a midi skirt, you need to focus on finding the right silhouette for your body type which, in turn, will help you master the proportions. While it does depend on the material, generally, I prefer to balance out the length of the skirt with a high-waist that emphasizes my curves and allows me to keep everything streamlined on top. My general rule of thumb is that the more loose and flowy the silhouette of the midi skirt, the more structure there needs to be on top and vice versa. In the winter and fall, I tend to play more with proportions when it comes to my midi skirt outfits. Pairing a heavier-material skirt (like this faux leather one) with a pair of tall boots works in part to keep me warm and also to create a sophisticated silhouette (at least I think so!). Once the weather gets warmer, no matter what midi you are wearing, strappy heels will help you to elongate your entire look and up the fancy factor. Just keep the shoes neutral if you are wearing a colorful skirt or one with a vibrant print. Lighter materials can easily be dressed down with sneakers, a vintage tee, and a bucket hat.

Shopping For A Warm-Weather Midi Skirt

This year, I would love to add a striped midi to my collection. This one looks wonderful as the vertical lines will provide an illusion of a longer body and the glitter knit ensures that you have a statement outfit on your hands. My lovely sister gifted me this Mango one for Christmas which works well as a transitional piece with lighter knits/sandals in the spring and turtlenecks/suede boots in the fall. Other ones that I can foresee being a staple in your warm-weather wardrobe include a belted beige style, a pleated wrap in this season’s go-to color, and an easy-breezy ivory one that shall fulfill whatever your social calendar has in store for you.

You have probably seen it all over Instagram because Reformation’s Bea skirt is a modern-day classic with its slim-fitting waist, high rise, and relaxed sweep. Plus it comes in four delightful prints — rattlesnake, daisy chain, polka dot, and Bengal tiger. This Sézane one is the epitome of Parisian elegance and would look just as fantastic paired with a vintage printed tee and sneakers as it would a silk cami and kitten-heels. And, their Amandine skirt is perfect for spring-time travels as it looks comfortable enough for sightseeing in, but chic enough that you won’t feel distraught looking over your vacation photos in the years to come (you know the feeling). We can’t truly be midi skirt lovers without taking a moment of silence for the beauty of this asymmetric…satin…watercolor…midi skirt. I better start brainstorming a way to get my hands on it, pronto.

Revered for their effortless, feminine vibe, you can always count on Anthropologie to have a wide selection of midi skirts to suit your every need. There are tiered ones for a dressed-up dinner, polka dot ones to inject a punch of fun into your day-to-day looks and wrap ones for a feeling of never-ending summer.
