What I Eat In A Day // Chef Anna Harouvis

For the past 18 years, Chef Anna Harouvis has owned and operated Good to Go Cafe, a vegan cafe in downtown Cleveland, which considers some of the city’s highest-performing athletes (such as the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Cleveland Indians) as regular customers. In recent years, she has also started Anna In The Raw, a line of juices and raw food (think cheezy kale chips and raw, vegan, and gluten-free desserts) that are as healthy as they are delicious. Her passion for serving raw, nutritious food started when she lost her father to cancer. She says, “When his heart stopped, a piece of mine died forever. If I can make any legacy to remember his sacrifices, it’s to extend the lives of all your loved ones.”

I knew that there was no-one better to kick off our new series, “What I Eat In A Day,” and so I hope you enjoy reading what a typical day of eating looks like for Anna!

“As soon as I wake up, I try to drink a liter of water to make sure I am starting my day hydrated. I add a lemon and cayenne pepper to alkaline my body after a night of digesting yesterday’s food. Drinking water throughout the day is vital, so I have a Berkeley filter at work to ensure I am consuming clean water. I also swear by one Hercules juice a day! It’s my favorite juice I make! It is kale, spinach, parsley, lemon, cucumber, and green apple. It is low in calories, but tastes delicious and always gives me a boost of energy. I find that if I have one a day, I never get sick!”

“Around 9 am, once I get to work, I make my “Wake the F Up” smoothie! It is perfect for waking my system up for a busy day! The smoothie contains zero sugar raw protein powder, mac powder (which I think every woman should consume to balance hormones), raw cacao nibs, a handful of frozen berries, cold-pressed coffee, coconut milk, and coffee CBD oil.”

“For lunch, I usually toast my homemade gluten-free, vegan bread and top it with some avocado and kimchi or almond butter and green apple. Both give me energy, but the kimchi is particularly good for my stomach. Other times I have an acai cherry smoothie bowl! Regardless, I always try to have an avocado a day because it is filled with healthy fats and helps to keep my brain healthy.

Then, around 3:30 or 4, I have a sugar-free protein bar and some raw cacao sour cherries to help beat the mid-day slump. The snack satisfies my sweet tooth, and the cherries are good for my blood and heart.”

“By the time I get home, it is usually 7:30 or 8. Dinner-wise, I typically make a protein-rich meal and try to avoid carbs – too much starch tends to bloat my belly. So, I will make a super big kale and superfood salad with my cold-pressed basil vinaigrette dressing or jackfruit crab cakes and root veggies. Another favorite is a gluten-free, vegan cauliflower pizza. Generally, I eat the whole thing, but if there is a piece of it leftover, I will have it the following morning for breakfast on the go! Sometimes I pick while cooking but am consciously trying to cut back because (on average) a chef can consume 3,500 calories from just tasting the food they make! Finally, dessert is usually my raw vegan and gluten-free chocolate torte.”

“I’m a night owl and always end my evening with a cup of Greek Icarian tea and Greek honey. The island Ikaria is where I’m from, and the teas and honey are said to have healing properties. I will have some almond butter before bed because my doctor said the fat would help me to stay asleep while also balancing my insulin throughout the night. During the holidays, I was eating a lot of caramel-raw-chocolate-covered-popcorn, and I found that though it tasted delicious, it made me extra tired in the morning. They say if something is hard to digest, you wake up exhausted even if you got the required amount of sleep. Our body only has so much time to process everything we eat!

I am Celiac and have Crohn’s, yet I don’t take any medications, so I believe the way I eat keeps me healthy. I try to avoid processed and GMO foods, and don’t worry too much about what is considered “healthy” or not. Remember: food doesn’t make you good or bad! It is your actions that define you.”

    Anna, Ron and I love your culinary skills your vibe your soul. Your Dad is with you every moment, and he’s so proud of you and your hard work, getting people to eat healthy with a high vibe palate well, it ain’t easy, but you accomplish that every day. Rock On 👩🏻‍🎤

    Excellent article, Anna iis amazing the APPLE a Day Prevention & Restoration Queen. We have very few places of healing foods & chefs who ate serious about food, flavor, but saving lives. Do proud of her! Living the life we all should eating for life and still for the eyes as well. CONGRATULATIONS nice work.
